REPORT: In Bamako, the Malian ready to fight for the unity of their country

April 7th, 2012

In less than a week, Kalifa Traore was forced to flee his home and his city. At age 46, the local representative in the Assembly of Mopti, a city in central Mali south of Timbuktu, could see the collapse principle that guided his country for more than 50 years. "One people, one goal, one faith" is indeed the currency of Mali for over half a century. But the unity of this vast west African nation, the low population density, has been strained since the declaration of independence by the National Liberation Movement Azawad (MNLA), the group of Tuareg rebels who took control of the north

. This statement has Kalifa Traore in all its forms. In the hours following the announcement, he rushed into the streets, waving the newspaper reports of atrocities committed by rebels in the north, showing them to anyone who would l & rsquo ; listen. "Mali is a country indivisible, it is a sovereign nation since 1960, he says, referring to the date on which the country became independent from France. This threat is serious, very serious.

"For humans, the impact of this declaration of independence on his safety and his family is real. April 3, while the rebels advancing toward the south, Kalifa Traore fled. "I was afraid, I have four children, two boys and two girls. I ran away from Mopti to Bamako. My house in Mopti is locked, I can not go back. The MNLA, Islamists and Al Qaeda are terrorizing us. In Gao [town in northern Mali rebel-held note], women are raped by people of MNLA. These people say they are from the north. But, we too are from north and we want to live in a united Mali. "

Following the March 22 coup organized in Bamako by low-ranking military power against Amadou Toumani Toure, the Malian army has lost control of the north in favor of Tuareg rebels and 'radical Islamists. Since then, the MNLA has tried to distinguish themselves from Islamist groups who took part in Operation

. But armed militias Kalifa Traore does not swerve. "These are Islamists, they are part of al-Qaeda, he insists. They impose Sharia law in northern cities. I am a Muslim, but I know the difference between my religion and politics. Politics must be secular, that is what the Malians want. We do not want Sharia law in the name of which is cut off hands and stoning are women, it's barbaric. "He continued:" I urge the international community - the UN, & rsquo ; European Union, the Community of African States (ECOWAS) - to militarily intervene as soon as possible. This is urgent, we must act quickly. "That day, in the heart of the Malian capital, dozens of youths gathered. Moah Amadou Coulibaly, a student of 23 years, took the floor. "For the liberation of northern Mali!" He shouted, cheered by the crowd. Once back down to a hastily improvised stage, the young man explains his views. "If the military can not fight, we will do it for them, he says in a grave tone. We have just formed the Youth Action for the Liberation of Mali and we want to confront the rebels. "In the dusty town and humid, there are many who speak of taking up arms against rebels north. Several organizations and associations have emerged and now have a storefront. Kalifa Traore and is a founding member of Coren, the Collective of nationals in northern Mali, a new group representing displaced who have fled the north. "One of the objectives of the group is to organize a militia here in Bamako, which may be driven by the Malian army. We can not wait for ECOWAS ", he says, referring to the organization of West African States, which is currently considering a plan of military action. "We call on our brothers in the south to join us," added the man. Kalifa Traore is not worried about the fact that pro-government armed militias can divide even further Mali. "We will not fight against our people. We will fight against the rebels, we will help the government. We must fight for unity. "

Romney wins three primaries and consolidates its position as favorite

April 5th, 2012

AFP - The multimillionaire Mitt Romney won the Republican primary Tuesday night three crucial in the race for the White House, thus consolidating its position as favorite to become the opponent of Barack Obama in the November election.

According to projections by several U.S. television networks, the former governor of Massachusetts (northeast), won the Maryland primary (east), the Federal Capital the Wisconsin and Washington (north).

With these three victories expected, Mitt Romney has crossed the symbolic threshold of 50% of delegates that will be needed in August to pocket the party's nomination. To achieve his goals, Mr. Romney must gather 1,144 delegates to represent the party's national convention in August in Tampa (Florida).

In Maryland, Mr. Romney (47%) win hands down in front of Mr. Santorum (30%), according to provisional results. The other candidates, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul far behind. In Washington, where Mr. Santorum was not on the ballot, Mr. Romney won 68% of the vote.

In Wisconsin, the victory of Mr. Romney is closer to 43% against 38% for Mr. Santorum, according to provisional results.

Mr. Romney should win a majority of the 98 delegates at stake in both states and Washington.

Reinforced by these successes, Mitt Romney appeared Tuesday night as the designated opponent of Mr. Obama, ignoring his three competitors Republican Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul.

"The president thinks he did a good job. (…) He thinks he is doing a good job as historically (the presidents) Abraham Lincoln and LBJ (Lyndon Johnson) and FDR (Franklin Roosevelt), "Mitt Romney launched his supporters Tuesday night , before denouncing the policies "statist" Obama who according to him, hinder free enterprise.

Earlier in the evening, in a radio interview given to Fox News, Romney felt that "there is no doubt that under this president, this recovery was the most warm, the lowest and most painful since the beginning of our economic history. "

For his part, Obama lashed out Tuesday at Mr. Romney as if it had become his only opponent. The president said that Mitt Romney should meet the proposed budget "radical," he said, proposed to Congress by the Conservative party.

If the arithmetic predicts a Republican race goes on, more and more signs point in favor of Mitt Romney.

The former governor of Massachusetts (northeast) collected last week a series of critical support, including that of former President George Bush or that of e ; canvas rising Republican Party Marco Rubio.

But Mr. Santorum does not seem ready to let go. Tuesday night to his supporters in his stronghold of Pennsylvania (northeast) - where a primary will be held April 24 - he promised to continue fighting in what he sees as the "second ; me half "of the Republican primary process.

"We have three weeks to show us in Pennsylvania. And winning that state. And after winning that state, the race becomes a little different in May, "he said.

Indeed, the ultraconservative candidate expects a more favorable month of May with elections in Texas, Arkansas, West Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana, Kentucky, as many States where voting is deemed ultraconservative stronger.

The prime minister refuses to relinquish power in this way but analysts say its days numbered.

AFP - Tuesday Newt Gingrich has consolidated its status as the main rival Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. President, during a debate on security where eight candidates showed their differences on Iran, Pakistan or immigration.

For the first time, the former chairman of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich appeared at the debate - the 11th since the start of the campaign for the Republican primary - in the clothes of the favorite in the polls that the former governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney has long been covered so far.

Throughout the evening, held in Washington, the two men are guarded from attack too virulent, making sure to place himself above the fray.

Mr.Gingrich was "in the middle game," worn by "his confidence and his professorial attitude." The Washington Post for his part believed that Mitt Romney, "if he did not deliver the most complete performance, managed, once again, to avoid the obstacles of its rivals."

The New York Times noted that the debate finally threw a "light thought the lack of unity of the party (Republican) national security a decade after the attacks of Sept. 11."

And on Afghanistan, Mr. Romney called for maintaining a force capable of collecting information and conducting special operations.
